Toddlers (18 months to 3 years)

The discovery that the child has a mind able to absorb on its own accord produces a revolution in education. We can now understand easily why the first period in human development, in which character is formed, is the most important.

— Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind

The first three years of life are the most fundamental in the development of human beings and their potential. These years are when the core of personality, language, movement and trust are developed. Our classroom environment has been prepared to meet the needs of the toddler in order to foster independence, psychomotor development and language acquisition. We also offer Spanish Immersion, speaking to the children in Spanish, providing the children with a bilingual learning environment.  Here, the teacher is the facilitator to provide this guidance and the classroom offers examples of how parents can follow through with the learning experience at home.

Maria Montessori's emphasis was on world peace by giving the child an overview of the whole world and universe. The entire theme of our program is based on Montessori's "Cosmic Education". This same cosmic theme is used every year because it encompasses everything and is cyclical rather than linear. Each year is a step upward in a spiral of learning as the child explores each study at his or her own level and pace.

Montessori Curriculum

Our classes are multi-aged in keeping with the Montessori Philosophy. The mixed age groups allows peer teaching, role models, and leadership experience for each child. The classrooms are prepared for activities suited to each child's needs and hence providing the opportunity to progress at his/her own developmental level. In addition, the mixed age group classes enhances the sense of community, allowing opportunities for socialization, self-confidence, respect for, and cooperation with others.

The teacher in a Montessori classroom acts only as a facilitator of learning. The personalized material itself allows the child to find and correct their errors, therefore providing the children complete control of their learning. Our classrooms are divided into five educational areas:

  • Math : Number recognition, counting, adding, subtracting, clocks, fractions, and the decimal system.

  • Language : Phonics, rhyming, matching, opposites, sequencing, reading, spelling, and writing.

  • Sensorial : Shapes, sizes, colors, building and exploring the senses.

  • Practical Life : Daily life skills such as scooping, pouring, dressing frames, washing, and tonging.

  • Cultural :  Exploration of Biology, Geography, History, and Physical Earth Science.
